Cyber Talent Forecast & Strategies for Success

As of today, 10% of all IT job postings are related to cyber security. Demand for cyber talent is growing at twice the pace of IT in general. By 2019, it is estimated there will be over one million unfilled cyber security jobs in the US. That deficit poses an untenable risk to the American people, the corporate world, and our national security. Let’s tackle this together.

Cyber Security is a unique beast

The first hurdle is understanding that you need to focus on cyber security. Bringing in a CISO or even a short term virtual CISO to consult is a great first step in this process. They will start with a comprehensive risk review. It is against human nature to seek out bad news but consider the risk of not knowing. Be brave enough to ask the tough questions. You want to be the smart person who asked the hard questions up front not the person interviewed on TV post-breach. No one wants to be that guy.

Once you have an idea of what your risks are, the second hurdle is to figure out how to block and tackle the issues. This is where a great CISO really shines.

When you are ready to pull together a team, there are many options. Which type of security do you need: Red Team, Blue Team, White Hat, Black Hat?  What certifications do you need:  CEH, CISSP, GSEC, CISM, CISA, CRISC, ECSA, GPEN, SSCP?  I know, alphabet soup, but they are all top notch certifications that distinguish the professionals in this space.

The third hurdle is getting the right partner to help you find the people you need. Cyber Security professionals are by nature and nurture privacy focused. The best candidates are unlikely to apply to your job ad or post their resume on a public job board. There are many great technology recruiters in the  marketplace and most do at least some cyber security recruiting. If your recruiter spends their day placing helpdesk people and Java developers they are not going to have the depth of experience to hold their own in cyber security. You need a dedicated cyber security recruiter who can talk the talk and who has an extensive network of passive candidates that they connect with regularly. Keep your other recruiters for the general IT work but call in a specialist for the cyber roles.  My firm, Artemis Precision Search, specializes in cyber security and makes it our business to stay on the forefront of the industry.
